Trannie anime character cosplayers? xD
« on: September 03, 2008, 04:29:40 pm »
Anybody go as a normal character? But instead of the character's normal gender, switch it up a bit? Just wondering...personally, I didn't like the pants I had to dress up as Matt from Death Note, so I wore a skirt and tights and went as FemMatt, or as my friend called it, Trannie Matt. He/she was quite popular. xDDD Anybody?

I don't think cosplaying a sex-changed version of a character is the same as cosplaying the character themselves dressed as the opposite sex.

Heheh...yeah, the pink. And I have no idea. I guess it doesn't really matter, they're pretty much the same thing. >.<

I agree with Blackjack, I don't think what you're describing counts as "trannie".  It's more gender-switching, Ranma style, than dressing in drag.  I think individuals such as Man Fey are more what the term suggests...

Anyway, I usually think the gender-switched versions are pretty adorable, especially if done well.

I kept having to ask myself if it was wrong to be attracted to the female Link cosplayers.  Or the Pikachu cosplayers.  (In the Link cosplay case, it's perfectly fine.  However, in the case of Pikachu cosplayers, there were some basic guidelines me and a friend worked out: ears, tail, makeup and maybe paws. But after that, it's just a little too furry for our likings. ^_^)

female links cinda make the link cosplay pop heavy, i was thinking to do a link in a different tunic... but now i dont know... maybe sheik lol ... or samus =P

edit: oh yeah and i think the term for this is crossplaying, cause its confusing with people who are transgender cosplaying or people cosplaying a person of different gender

Nope.  Crossplay is when a girl dresses up as a boy character or vice-versa.

It's "gender-swap" cosplay when you go as girl-Lelouch, or man-Faye.

Yes, "trannie" is not a very good word for this, and possibly a bit vulgar considering the context.

Nope.  Crossplay is when a girl dresses up as a boy character or vice-versa.

It's "gender-swap" cosplay when you go as girl-Lelouch, or man-Faye.

I was going to suggest "genderbending," but "gender-swap" is more descriptive. Technically, it doesn't refer to the gender of the person cosplaying, but rather the gender of the clothing. When the gender of the clothing doesn't match your own gender either, though... that just gets confusing.

I've heard Man-Faye described as "gender****," since he doesn't really change the clothing at all but is instead messing with people's gender perceptions in a rather unkind way.  (Replace the asterisks with an appropriate four-letter word)

If you want an otaku buzzword for the gender-swap phenomenon, you could always call it "Sexy no Jutsu." :P That requires some inside knowledge to understand, but if you know the source, it pretty much says it all....

Considering how feminine Link's clothing can be, I'd say there's nothing wrong with it. :P For instance, there's really only been one Zelda game where he's ever actually worn pants.  You can change Link's costume by adding a skirt or whatnot, but ultimately I don't think it's necessary.

Link is a "come as you are" character, really. He has qualities that boys and girls of all ages can appreciate. ;) I didn't really mind at all seeing a dozen other people of all ages and genders cosplaying the same chara as me. Just think of it as "Four Swords" run a-muck...

lol, it was funny when people kept calling me sexy no jutsu naruto just cuz I was really a girl.
but I was really a girl going as a guy dressed like a girl. If that makes sense...

To be honest, I don't blame them for thinking so, considering "female Naruto" virtually always refers to Sexy no Jutsu...

Well, I guess "trannie" is a bit rude, but my friend kept calling me that so it kinda stuck in my head. Sorry if I offended anyone. >.< But thx to those of you who responded about the "crossplayers"? ~shrugs~ I dunno what to call 'em. xD

Now I'm confused, too. I don't really understand the difference between "crossplay" and "gender-swap" now.  Would say, a crossplayer be someone that dresses up like the character, shaves arms/legs, wears bra, etc?  And a "gender-swap" cosplayer is someone that just, well, wears the girly clothes but makes no effort to hide their gender?

I'm GUESSING that gender-swap is changing the characters gender, and cross play is changing your gender(apperance) to portray them... who makes this stuff up?

You are correct!  Example:

Me dressing as Mikage from Utena, or Zell from FF8 was me crossplaying.

If I were to dress as a GIRL FORM of Zell, not just dude Zell, I'd be gender-swap cosplaying :)

I dunno who makes them up!  I just know because I've been a cross-player for a really long time!

I think this is where we start to need pictures.  I'll choose a familiar example subject: good ol' Mario and Luigi.

This is crossplay:

...Whereas THIS is gender swap:

Any questions? :)

Nope, just the ones in the first pic. They wear those mustaches full-time, by the way!

j/k ;)

Those pix are PRICELESS for clarifying that!
I recommend you share those with the folks who are going to run Homophobia in Otakudom!

FYI, there are similar discussions in the non-con community:
e.g.:
what is a female  or male impersonator vs. a crossdresser vs. a transvestite vs. a drag queen or king vs. a transsexual vs. a transgendered person vs. an intersexed person?

**to my understanding**
a female  [or male] impersonator is: a person who does not biologically have female gender (or does not solely) [or who does not have male gender (or does not solely)] and who performs professionally in full persona as a female, for an audience fully cognizant that that is what they are watching, and who could fully pass during that performance as being believably female. Often they are trying to imitate a particular, famous female [or male] and sing as well as dress in that female's [or male's] style.

a crossdresser is: a person who comfortably and publicly adopts the apparel the mainstream might ascribe to someone of another gender than theirs, for whatever reason.

a transvestite is: a person who privately adopts the apparel the mainstream might ascribe to someone of another gender than theirs, for its erotic value. (Historically there have been many men with this fetish who are heterosexual and married and keep this fetish secret even from their wives.)

a drag king [or queen] is: a person who identifies as TG, TS or female [or male], who performs publicly in a persona as a male [or as female], for an audience fully cognizant that that is what they are watching, but often performing with more flair than a focus on what in Paris Is Burning, for example, was referred to as "realness". Some could pass, but others couldn't, and that's not the point; their singing, dancing, acting, conveying of attitude is more important than their capturing of the ability of the audience to momentarily think they "really" look male [or female].

a transgendered person experiences themselves to have been born bodily different than what they would like to experience, or what they internally experience, as their gender; but they are not necessarily going to do anything surgical about it, or try to change their legal status, or anything like that.

a transsexual person experiences themselves to have been born bodily different than what they would like to experience, and internally experience, as their gender; and they are, to the extent available to them, attempting to live their life as the other gender, whether that means trying to "pass" full time [think Boys Don't Cry], or having "top surgery" as my FTM TS friend is currently saving up to do, or having "bottom surgery" as my MTF TS and my FTM TS friends have already done....

an intersexed person was born with both sets of private anatomy; in most cases, however, such babies are surgically reassigned to be one gender or the other at birth. (Yes this does exist and yes I've known folks it happened to.)

It can be fun when folks mix it up....a good friend of mine is a male-to-female post-operative transsexual who has successfully performed as a drag KING! :)

So now if THAT person went as either of those versions of mario and luigi...oy vey! LMAO!

Well, it's just simple Google Image search. :) But I could share them I suppose. Actually, I have no idea who's running that, so maybe you could just link them to the images?

Yikes... informative, but I think that goes pretty far beyond what most people really need to know for this topic.

Believe it or not, most crossplayers aren't transgendered. It's just that the ones who are TG tend to be more dedicated to crossplay itself as its own hobby. The rest of 'em just do it because they like a particular character, or enjoy a laugh.

Most gender-swappers are RL girls making female versions of male characters for fun. I have seen a male version of Sakura from Naruto, though. (Somebody wanted to even the score. ;) )
