Dragoball Z was the first I watched that I was actually aware of being anime.  I was into pokemon pretty heavily before that, but I didn't realize it was an anime..
haha. I think I was 13(ish) around that time
Princess Mononoke was actually my first real anime movie I had ever watched, and I loved it. =D

Dragonball Z. I saw figurines and images in magazines.

I was weirded out by the eyebrows and body-sized hair, I knew it had to be "that anime stuff" :P

Now I may be de-railing my own topic here but all this talk of downer anime made me remember something- during the AMV contest there was one anime where a girl was riding her bike down a hill and the brakes failed causing her to end up dying by train. What was that and is it out in the States yet?

The movie in question is Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo / The Girl Who Leapt Through Time.  It is a 100 minute movie.  Not to spoil it but, no, she actually time leaps just before the train hits her.  It is available in the states.  I would recommend getting it.  It is a great movie.

Sailor moon was probably the first I watched But I really didnt start liking Anime specifically untill I was a teenager and started watching Pokemon/Yu-Gi-Oh/Spirited Away. Still, the first anime I watched fully in Japanese was Chobits. From there I realized that Anime's in English are far weaker. I wont be going back. LOL not if I can help it.

The first anime I watched was Robotech. I would get up at 5:30am before school to catch these.
It was also the first cartoon (as I new it at the time) where a character died. (In the begining, I think it was Roy Focker or something. It really surprised me)

For me, it was either Sailor Moon, or Drangon Ball Z on Cartoon Network.
