Linux is one of the most prominent examples of free software and open source development; typically all the underlying source code can be freely modified, used, and redistributed by anyone.
The reason why I opt for Linux over Windows anywhere I can (except for work, because work requires me to use their Windows software) are n-fold:
1. There are no viruses for Linux. Take a web browser and go into the worst spots of the internet; viruses will bounce harmlessly off your computer, as opposed to being swallowed by Windows.
2. It's free. Entirely.
3. It's easier to use. If you think otherwise about this point, remember that you've more or less grown up on Windows, and you've done things the Windows way your whole life. For example, to get a Windows computer free of viruses, what you need to do is this:
a. Install Windows.
b. Update Windows to the latest set of patches.
c. Get an antivirus program, and make sure it's reputable.
d. Get a spyware program, and make sure it's reputable.
e. Get a firewall.
For Linux, the process is a bit different:
a. Install Linux.
That's it.
This is why I love Linux.
The only downside to Linux is that Microsoft uses its corporate-backed funding (as opposed to Linux' dedicated team of volunteers) to buy out game studios and other software manufacturers, which is why Linux has almost nothing in the way of gaming. But for anything else, it's a veritable goldmine.
