Emancipation
« on: November 28, 2008, 11:58:25 am »
Has anyone else had an experience where their family and parents have treated they so awfully that they have wanted to become an emancipated minor just so they no longer have to interact with those people every day?

Eh...only really abused kids, I would imagine, should get this. I have a friend who was homeschooled and now goes to a strict, uniform-mandatory Christian school and isn't allowed out of the house unless it's for school or church related things. She's pretty stressed and her life is nearly completely controlled, and I've even been told I'm not allowed to be her friend, but I even think she shouldn't be emancipated. Sometimes, you have to voice your opinion and even if your parents don't listen, you'll still be young enough at 18 to be able to turn your life how you want it. ^^

Whereas on the other end of the spectrum, I'm totally absolutely free but I have trouble finding stuff I want to do.

Meh.  I've only got 2 months before I turn 18 and my mom's become a lot less controlling since I started going to CCC, so it hasn't been on my mind much lately.

Being oldest isn't something to be proud of...

I think for Emancipation though one has to prove that they can support themselves without parents.

You pretty much have to grow up mentally and emotionally if you're going to be emancipated. Most people consider themselves grown up, but they're far from it. I'm almost nineteen, and sometimes even I still act like a child about things. My mother and I were at a point a few years ago where we fought constantly, even physically, too. It was bad, but that was also because I was immature when I was 100% that I was as mature as I could get.

Your mind likes to tell you things, and at the time you can think all you want how mature and ready you are to leave, but in reality you're not. I'm going to be moving to Seattle soon, and even I'm still having trouble figuring things out. Some people just have to get through a point in their life that's hard, especially with their parents, and it usually passes as you mature.

When you're emancipated, you got a job and bills to pay.

And I know I'm mature when I pay the rent on time. Everything else is my call.
