Happy Holidays! Which do you celebrate?
« on: December 14, 2008, 11:48:51 am »
Its the time of year when EVERY retail store has to have "that talk" with their employees about what to say to guests/customers about the holiday season. Many are saying you cant say Merry Christmas now and have to say Happy Holidays, Luckily my store says that you can say anything you want so that is nice.

I celebrate Christmas with my family and also have a small Yule ceremony at home. Yule to me is a more earthy way to celebrate the comming winter and always de-stresses me this time of year. I normally cut all the branches off of my christmas tree after every christmas so I just have a tree trunk. The tree trunk is what I burn in the fireplace the next years Yule. :)

So what are you celebrating and which holidays interest you?

I celebrate Christmas in many ways. traditional American way, Scandinavian way, and the Japanese way. ;3 I should be celebrating Hanukkah because I'm part jewish but I'm not faithful in that religion. I'm not really faithful in any religion so commercial Christmas is usually the way I go.

christmas is what my family does,
tho any holiday for my family is almost thanks giving-ish because we trend to stress how thankful we are that we are able to get together and spend time with our family,

I still need reminding time to time that its okay to be happy cuz this is the time of year my best friend died and with wedding stuff coming up its an extra reminder that he's not here

@jaz
I'm sorry jaz. that sounds really bad. thats nice that you also treat Christmas sort of like thanksgiving as well. I hope the wedding goes well and what not.

I actually know how to make cream puffs. their fun but a little consuming. mmmm homemade soba.

I should probably make some food this next week to give to people for the holidays. like our neighbors or something. or homeless people on the street.

we celebrate (appropriately named) magical present day.
It's pretty much christmas, if you get rid of all the religious part of it.
Being totally un-religious, we didn't think it was right to call it "christ"mas, so, me and my friend renamed it, magical present day.
and having a tradition japanese christmas would be amazing!

Ive always wanted to go to a Kwanza Celebration. I think that would be super awesome. Of course finding an open celebration might prove difficult.... Anthropology is my passion so different cultures are always fun. A friend invited me to a Chanukah celebration a couple years ago and it was really cool.

On Christmas Eve the family gets together and me and my cousins usually end up drunk. Christmas day we open presents then have a simple lunch and I usually head back to Corvallis in the evening because I usually end of working the next day.

I try to celebrate christmas without all the secular stuff.

The only baby that got presents for christmas was Jesus, and they were not toys, they were gold frankensense and muhr (however those are spelled)  That being said, people tend to get their hopes up around christmas so it can be a let down.  Also, if someone gets a christmas present, they feel obligated to give a gift in return.  In my opinion the same gift given in a different season has more meaning.

I'm a Christmas kid, celebrating it for all its Christian intentions and meanings. Yes, I'm fully aware of the pagan symbols that were initially taken and had Christian meanings tacked onto them, and the notion that Jesus Christ was not actually born anywhere near December (more likely Spring), but still, it is what the holiday represents to me. It is a symbolic image of a very real event, the birth of my saviour Jesus Christ. I'm down with celebrating that every day of the year! ^_^
