no school for me. but my school is being stubborn. there going to hold a meeting at 4:30am to see if they should open or not. it's like 'come one, you already told us it's closed. just keep it closed.'

Y'know, I just realized that I'm hoping for the snow to be gone by Wednesday or at least partially gone.  I fly into Portland that day and I'd like to avoid difficult landings....

And to give everyone a heads up, if the rain storm that came by here happens to reach Oregon in a few days... woo boy....

I'm worried about driving anywhere in general. I hope I won't have to unless the roads are just slush. But if it's ice then I really don't want to go anywhere unless I really need to.

I'm not too worried.  I'll be walking to work, like I did today.  So, unless someone who has no business driving on ice is making bad decisions that lead to their vehicle jumping onto the sidewalk, I should be fine.

Well,  I am unemployed and a student, so I don't have to worry.  NO CLASS TILL JANUARY 5th!  WOOT!!

For those of you who are relatively new to driving in the snow.  If you drive a front wheel drive car, the hand-brake is your friend.  Many don't realize that the hand-brake (emergency brake) lever next to their seat will only apply braking to the rear wheels.  This means that if the hand brake is applied while accelerating the front of your car will attempt to pull you forward, while the rear of your car just drags behind.  If you have trouble with your car fishtailing (the rear end tries to change lanes), or you have to travel down a hill, use the hand-brake!  This will keep your car in-line with the road.

If you want to do cookies in the parkinglot.  Drive backwards and pull the handbrake while turning the steering wheel.  You can do a quick 180.   ;D  Don't attempt this manuver near any light poles or other vehicles.

Leave plenty of room between you and the person in front of you, and tap your brakes if you don't have anti-locking ones.  Stay away from overpasses, if you can, and stay a constant speed and drive straight (don't change lanes), if you can't.

Have fun in the snow!

Also when you drive you should drive in a lower gear. I know when I go down my hill to get to my house, I put my car in 1st gear. It slows down the car without having to apply brakes. Braking is not always a good idea, and when you go over ice and begin to feel your car slide, let off the gas, but don't hold down the brake. Instead try shifting into a lower gear, it automatically slows the car down.

Yeah I am not looking forward to that. I bet the ice will stay for one more day then melt away tomorrow. So you people that are still in school might get one more snow day. Hopefully then it will snow Wednesday night and you wont have to go to school at all this week ;D

I  put chains on my wife's truck in the dark-getting light this morning. She made it to work okay, but the chain on one side broke, and chewed up the paint. So tomorrow I think we will be spending the day with Mr. L.Schwab and co. Hopefully they'll give us the 90 days same as treatment, and we can both drive away with traction tires. Cross the fingers, eh?

Last I heard it's freezing rain tomorrow, and more snow the day after. oh joy!
Have Fun

Try my advice.  Hand-brake is your friend.  Front wheel drive only.  When going down a steep hill this will keep the rear wheels in the rear where they belong.   ;D  As for getting up the hill.  You have legs don't you?   ::)  No really sometimes it is easier to just park the car downhill and walk to it.  As long as you aren't parking it on the side of the road, where everyone can play bumper cars with it.  Getting up an icy hill is just plain impossible.  I still haven't figured out who the genius is that determines where to place the stop signs on hills.  Good thing too, poor slob would have a life expectancy measured in minutes, if not seconds.

That's the thing.  I live at the bottom of the hill.  Going down wouldn't be so bad but going up a super steep hill I don't think I can do it.  My roomie tried and failed.

Flight was a little bit bumpy but that was about it.  It's good to be back.
All I have to do now is make my way back home on the train.  We had to change ours plan for getting me back home since we were worried about ice on I-5.

Yea!  Aloha!  So coming to Anime Friday tomorrow?  I'm playing Tokyo Godfathers.  It is sort of Christmasy (Is that a word?). I'll probably toss in a few other Christmas type anime as well.  The snow is pretty much gone now, just heavy rain.  Yes, back to good ole Oregon sunshine.   ;D

Edit:  Well it WAS gone, now it came back.  Looking more and more like a white Christmas.

I called in today...we were scheduled to do a store in Bend tonight (I work for an inventory company), meaning I'd probably get back at around 2-3 in the morning when there's a good chance everything would be frozen.  Really didn't want to try to get back home over the I-205 bridge in that.
