HP is an obsolete definition.
« on: December 19, 2008, 01:32:17 am »
Let's face it: HP is an outmoded definition of measuring health in a modern society, where on a personal level, health never really gets damaged significantly or really lost. Sure there's hospitals and such, but combat-level injuries are rare among most people.

But there's another measurement that could result in death or glory among just about every single person, and whether you like it or not, it's sitting there inside you, waiting for you to assign it a value of some sorts. I put forth the concept of SP, or sanity.

There's a slow SP drain during the winter, as everyone's bundled up indoors and the outside is all melancholy. I end up taking an SP hit every now and then when I'm faced with a retarded customer on the phone, and I get a bit of it back when I talk to my dad.

Same thing most likely goes for you. SP changes all the time. It comes and it goes, and if you stay a 15-second night at an inn, it's most definitely not restored. And if SP hits 0, you're screwed just as hard, if not harder, than if your HP hit 0.

Have fun with that.

Grr...  Another D**N system trying to change the meaning of an acronym.  I just got used to SP=Spell Points.  So is IN=Intelligence and WI=Wisdom?  What is MA  Is it still =Magical Ability or did it change to =Mental Acuity?  If the latter, then my MA definitely has trouble this time of year, and my SP is in deep doo doo.

"Wendy (my sisters name), I'm HOME!  Let's put a smile on that face!"  ;D

PS.  I still fight over if it is DM=Dungeon Master or GM=Game Master  ::)

I prefer DM, though I suppose GM is more accurate.

Game Master always sounds like Gay Master at 3 in the morning and I'm not a fan of fetish RPG's, so definitely DM.

On topic...
HP doesn't even represent combat damage well.  It's too general.  If you have your arm cut off, you're not going to lose x HP and grow it back later; it's gone.  You can't get hit by the sharp part of a sword and have 100% recovery; ever.  Additionally.  Just because you've been in combat for 10 years doesn't mean a bullet to the head is any less lethal than it would be to someone who's been in combat for 1 year.  I'm a fan of interpretive damage assignment in TableTop, where the DM estimates the severity of the wound and assigns a value that would contribute to causing that person to passing out and a rate of recovery.  Since pain is a global threshold, having a numeric value to represent that threshold is appropriate.

I've got a vast MAX SP value. If the average person has a MAX SP of 50,000 (inflated to allow for subtle adjustments and fine tuning), I'm probably packing 125,000+. It's hard to irk me like that, but it can be done.

(And I always thought that people so easily influenced by their emotions are weak; maybe that's just perspective.)

working retail at a game store has doubled my Max Sp. Though when it comes to school every hit seems to be Critical.

I've been doing a ton of RPG stuff lately, so it didn't even occur to me that the same Acronym was on the back of my computer. :P

All this talk about sanity reminded me about Call of Cthulhu. I wish someone in my group had it =)

Well, the slow drain of SP during the winter may or may not apply to persons living in an area that has a low level of sunlight most of the year, like Oregon. In fact, because of our climate, vitamin D deficiency has become somewhat of an epidemic in Oregon. I also find myself having somewhat of a reverse case of seasonal affective disorder, becoming more melancholy in the summer months. So right now, my SP isn't doing too badly, although it has been drained some lately due to stress. :p X3
