Happy Hanukkah, Everyone!
« on: December 24, 2008, 09:37:44 am »
OK, even though I am not Jewish, I just wanted to say this.

As I see it it's a celebration about a people winning for themselves the right to practice their own religion.
I think that's important for everyone alive.

So enjoy the miracle, spread the good news, and remember that when you choose a religion and even if you choose "none," or "I'm not sure yet," or "other questions are more important to me right now," your freedom to choose exists because of people like Judah Maccabee, who fought for freedom of religion way back then. (Also take a moment to think of people who are defending your rights this very minute, most of whom you will never meet, but they are out there, near and far...)

If you are a practising Jew, I just want to say *thank you.*

* TanisNikana 's holiday goes unnoticed, and is mostly over; there are only 14 days of it remaining!

Huh? What holiday is mostly over with 14 days left? And also Happy Hanukkah to every one who observes it. Even though I'm not particularly religious I like the essence of the ceremonies, they are pretty and people are really moved by them, which is nice.
And now I'm a catgirl?

The voice of the one I love
was all I could hear as I lay broken in the darkness
My own voice faltered
My wings no longer had the strength to fly

I'm spending Hanukkah, in Santa Monica,
Wearing sandals lighting candles by the sea.
I spent Shavuos, in East St. Louis,
A charming spot but clearly not the spot for me.

Those eastern winters, I can't endure 'em,
So every year I pack my gear
And come out here to Purim.

Rosh Hashona, I spend in Arizona,
And Yom Kippa, way down in Mississippa.
But in Decemba, there's just one place for me.
'Mid the California flora,
I'll be lighting my menorah.
Every California maid'll
Find me playing with a dreidl.
Santa Monica, spending Hanukkah by the sea
Have Fun

Ok that's pretty funny Jaybug!
Thanks Prinz Eugen (noting spelling!), and agreed.
My (Christian-raised, Buddhist and Hinduism-studying) boyfriend and I (from a family of Chassidic Rabbis, *formerly* also a ritualist) went to a Unitarian Universalist Church for a Chanukah / Solstice all-ages sing-along :)
Hm, month-long holiday: Eid? Ramadan? Advent?
As validated by the Department of Antiquities of the State of Israel, the land on which my cousins the Chassidic Rabbi & Rebbitzen built their Moshav (kind of a religious community that shares land but retains nuclear families and individual possessions within households), in Mevo Modi'in, was **the**
Maccabee family homestead.
(The Maccabees were the freedom fighters behind the Chanukah holiday.)
