How are you saving up for the con?
« on: January 10, 2009, 08:50:33 pm »
Sakuracon is coming up and kumoricon is less than a year away. I was just wondering how people were saving money for the cons and what they will be spending the money on.

The main way I am getting my money is through working as well as tax returns. I am also going to be taking cans in and saving the spare change I have.

I'm going to be getting a hotel room for both cons and I am already registered so the rest of the money will go to merchandise. ;D

I don't save up :D

I spend my my money on cosplay, registration, and hotel rooms so by the time that's all done with I just waste away any of my remaining money on random con stuff.

I get allowance when I work around the house. and then I'm trying to get a job as a babysitter or something. :/ money is also given for my holidays and good grades. hope both of those go well. >_<

I plan on spending it on a room, doujins, manga, art, and any misc items I can't find anywhere.

I usually set a plan of what I can spend on cosplays and pre con stuff and then what I get to spend at con.

Work, work, and some more work after that. I really only spend my money on a few things: electronics, costuming, cons, and PDXLAN. I make good money where I work so I can usually save up money fairly easily. I'm going to attempt to go to AX this year so I'll have to be saving a bit more than normal up to the summer.

! You are quick, haha.

I work at a place called Precision Castparts. We make parts for the howitzer, a ton of different airplane engines, and other gas turbine engines. If you've ever flown Southwest your plane had a part that my company makes in it. What I do is hard to describe to people that have never done something like it, but I'm a grinder. We grind out the defects the other departments (like x-ray) find in the parts then blend the welds that are put into those areas.

I think that my tax returns will cover most of it. But just in case I will have some. Plus it would be a good idea to start saving, maybe even opening a savings account ;D

The way I save for cons is being frugal. xD
Unless if I'm spending on cosplay supplies.

I have spending issues so a savings account would really help me  get control over it. I think if I put half of my pay check into savings by the time I get out of college I should have more than enough to pay for many cons till I get a good job XD

Well, by the end of this month, I'll have somewhere between $300 and $600 sitting in a savings account, depending on a lot of various factors.  I'll hopefully be getting a job, internship, commission, contract, or SOME form of income this year as well.  My classes are pretty much all paid for at this point, and I do chores for my home and board, so my income, besides what I'm spending on conventions, is going right into investing in better musical equipment, which will hopefully be paying for itself in a few years. :P

For Sakuracon, I'm going to hopefully be signing up for Gaming Staff and staying in a super-duper-cheap hotel I stayed in last year.  I don't go anywhere other than gaming, so besides admission, hotel, and gas, all the money I'll be spending there is $10 on a Magic Booster Draft tournament.
Next up comes a project I have for MEW Con which will cost me about $350 after shipping expenses, which I'll be working on over the summer.
Then comes Kumoricon.  I've already paid my staff dues, I'll just have to worry about getting there.  I'll hopefully be staying with friends.  If not, that'll be $60.  Again, I won't be leaving the game room except to sleep and play piano, so I don't need any more money.
I'll hopefully be going to Orycon in the fall, which will cost me some money.  Not sure at this point.  Like every other con ever, I don't plan on spending money anywhere other than reg, room, and transportation.
Finally, MEW Con.  Hopefully, the con will have the funds to pay for a Programming Suite and the con won't cost me anything other than those $350 I mentioned earlier.  If I do wind up having to pay for the room myself, I can probably handle that.  Besides that, the money I spend will depend on the money I have.  If I have $2000 lying around, I'm buying 10 more 27" Flatscreen CRT's for Gaming.  That's probably not going to happen though. :P

I always found it useful to save left over lunch money when I was trying to save up for something. Or starve myself a little to save like $5 per week or so.

Well I won't be going to Sakuracon and I don't have a job so really there is no way for me to save up, heh. I can put a little of my financial aide away for later, but by the time Kumoricon gets here I will have had to start paying it all back anyway, so...yeah...and I will have a wedding to save and plan for, which is no cheap thing, lol.

But hopefully I get this job I've got a call back for. I may work at Noodles & Co. soon! ^_^

I'm making 1.25" sized buttons.

No, I'll make anything that people request to the best of my abilities. I don't want to limit my market. :)

(Though at K-con if I get a table with my friends at the artists alley we'll have a set selection there.)

That's the plan.

I still have to figure out the exact cost of materials per button but I think they're going to be $1. I feel like the most people would probably buy them at that price and it would be the easiest to handle.

I actually have an entire separate savings account at my bank reserved for Kcon. I won't be able to go to Sakuracon (maybe next year...) so every paycheck I'm setting aside $15 for the con. By June I should have $300 saved, 100 of which will go to hotel, another 100 probably to my cosplay, and the rest of that to food for the room. After that though I'll still be saving for con stuff and art.

and I think I might've found some possibilities for a some jobs. I think I'll be able to handle everything I need too for each con. :3
