Poll

We need to decide if we want to do the Masquerade Ball this year as a mini event outside of Con or if we want to do it at the Con Itself. We dont want to double it up again as we have other dances that we could do instead of 2 of the same one. Which would

Masquerade ball in the spring/summer before Con
26 (65%)
Masquerade Ball at Con
9 (22.5%)
I dont want a Masquerade Ball at all.

Masquerade Ball Poll *Need imput*

Like written above we just want to know which would be prefered. We plan on doing ONE more dance as a mini event in the spring/summer before con and obviously we plan on dances at the con. We just dont want to double up one type of dance as we have been doing.  :) :)

Last year they were kinda strict about wearing the masks. They said we couldn't get in if we didn't have one and we HAD to keep it on at all times. Why is that? Don't they know that those things get hot?

Also just for consideration remember that if we do it as a mini event there are no panels it could conflict with, so it would JUST be a ball event. At Kumoricon there will be potential for missing the ball compleatly by wanting to be somewhere else. I dont know if this is pro or con for you, just a realization.

I vote for having it be a mini event in the summer for a few reasons.

- Wouldn't interfere with any panels or events at the con
- It'd give us something con-related to do before the actual con
- Maybe we could make it actually like a ball and not a rave w/ masks? =DDD

Understandable, but thats kinda the main part of it being a masquerade ball. The masks. Thats why you have the option to not vote for it at all. Plus you can make a special mask that is more functional for you instead of just finding any mask.

I understand. But even at regular masquerades the ppl take the masks off at one point. But no matter what mask you make (unless it has air conditioning or something xD) it's gonna get hot. We gotta be able to take them off sometimes.

I like the idea of it being separate from the con. I always have a hard time actually getting into the dances at the con because it reaches capacity too quickly and I don't want to line up two hours before.

Jaki will have to find a solution to this. I cant really speak to it 100% at this point. I could imagine if we had a different area (like our casino games for other dances) where masks could be removed. But probably on the dance floor it would be nessasary. I know there has been much debate about it allready so its an issue that people are aware of. At this point its no where near the dance to tweak the details, we just want to know ahead of time so we can find the venue. And "start" planning. :)

That being said, if I was free, I'd rather have it in the summer.

The point of the masquerade is to be in masks.. that is why masks are required on the dance floor.  If you need to remove your mask, you step outside.  I understand that they can be uncomfortable (I have worn them as well), but that is why we encourage you to be creative, or make your masks ahead of time.  You can make masks that fit comfortably, unlike the masks we offer at con - they are a quick fix for those who are not prepared.  And the masks on sticks - while they look cool, you have to hold them to your face the whole time, and that can be a problem.

Ditto, I tried the mask thing twice just thinking it would be fun, but truthfully for me wearing a mask makes dancing unpleasant.

And people not wearing masks in the ballroom telling others to wear masks, yeah that kinds frosted me a bit too.

I was planning on staying quiet, but after reading some of the responses, I feel like I must say something.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/masquerade%20ball

Yes, masks can be difficult to dance in, but they're part of what make a "Masquerade Ball." It's suppose to evoke that old-world elegance of a bygone age and era and I think they're really fun. If wearing a comfortable mask is really that important to you, try a mask like this~

http://mardigrascostumes.com/Half.htm (topmost, right side)

I have a mask similar to this one and I've worn it for set-up and tear-down of the Sakura Con Masquerade Ball. It's also lined with a very thin felt, so it is very comfortable. And if people are still worried about breathability/visibility, there are lace masks and plastic "cut-out" masks~

http://mardigrascostumes.com/Eye.htm

And here are some other sites with a wide variety of masks~

As long as it's not past cerfew, would minors like me be able to go if it was AT the con? :/

At con last year, the masquerade was before curfew, and everyone was able to attend.

Im hearing alot of imput for why people want it outside of con. But does anyone have imput on why they want it at con? (Aside for the age limit :)) I keep seeing the numbers rise but little explanation. :) Just curious.

I personally don't want the Masq. Ball at con again but I'm sure their reasons would be something like:
- Minors could attend
- It wouldn't conflict with anything over the summer break
- Etc.

I could give more reasons for why it shouldn't be at the con ;D

Honestly Dana the ball at KCon last year wasn't too great. It was fun as a dance but it wasn't really, slow or anything like that.

And KCon'll always have a dance or so going on so no worries~

I think if we did a masquerade again that it needs to be pretty strictly governed. Only ballroom dancing, keep the masks on, ballroom type music only, that sort of thing.

Thats the plan. We dont plan on having a Masquerade Ball/rave again. It just seems silly. Its much easier to do this outside of con in my opinion as most people at con look at rooms and say "hey whats going on in there?" then realize its a dance they cant go to and get upset.

We will definently do dances AT con regardless. But as for type of dances thats still up in the air at this point. Just like if we did the Masquerade Ball at con, or Spring/summer dance would be something to be decided still. (Ideas like swing dance, sock hop, rave...etc....but thats a ways off to decide for sure)

LOL. Im sure the directors will have to decide baised off of other mini events, meetings, etc. They may allready have an Idea, I know that Jaki (programming) and Dawn (relations) pretty much do the dances (with my help, yay!). Somehow I doubt it is the highest priority at this point lol. Especially so far away. But as soon as its announced/confirmed, it will be posted im sure.

since most people want it in the summer, maybe have a semi formal dance at the convention so there is a still a chance for people who can't make it in the summer to have attend some kind of formal dance

I see, it that date happens to land on a personal event.

Forgive me if I pose this question and it seems silly but I'm just looking for clarification, and I did read the entire post (I still may have missed it though) but if we have the Ball out side of Kcon (which I completely agree with) would that cut into costs for the Ball?

Such as - for some reason, would it be hard or expensive to schedule outside Kcon as an event? And if so, would that put an even smaller size on people able to attend? Would there be limitations on music that would have otherwise not existed with the Ball being inside Kcon? Outside the Con would this still be the Ball that all our expectations remember (aside from being more of a Ball and not a rave)?

That's what I'm getting at really.

Good questions. :)
When we do mini events outside of our convention our goal (most of the time) is to generate intrest in our convention and also revenue. Having a dance outside of con will have an entrance fee, much like a High School Prom. Those fees go twards the the dance space rental, decorations, food etc. And we put the rest of the money twards the convention to make it even more awesome. Our first dance of the year on February 7th is $10 if you pre-reg and $15 at the door. Further dances will vary baised on our venue and many other factors

When we do dances at Kcon we dont charge an extra fee (in most cases) because it is an event many people can attend at one time. (exceptions being panel dances that want to do hotel catering. Then we  have to charge for the catering fee but its normally only a few $)

Having "Pay to go to" dances as mini events offer our otaku a fun safe environment to have fun, and also to generate funding for Kumoricon. We have a lot of fun doing them too!

Unfortunatly it is true that with "Pay to go to" dances we do tend to loose some attendance but we average around 75 to 150 people at these dances and are always hoping to make those numbers higher. *So bring lots of friends cause if our dances dont make a profit....then bad things happen lol*

Also regardless of having a dance at con or outside of con we will still provide the same things. (you mentioned the possibility of cutting into funds if we have to do it outside...) We will always have room to dance, always have music (of course) and we normally provide alternitives to dancing all the time. (breathing rooms/gaming/etc...something like that) Of course AT con you can leave the dance at any time if you get bored and wander elsewhere.

I hope I got all your questions...If not feel free to ask :)

As much as I love having a masquerade ball at con, I think that when we did it as a separate mini event it worked better because people had more time to make their masks and they didn't come to con expecting us to have mask making supplies and then weren't able to get into the ball because we ran out.

Just a thought.  I love going to both but having it outside of con just made it feel less rushed.
