i would say toph bei fong becuase toph can control sand where gaara's sand is another being all together.

I'm going to have to say Beowulf. Leonidas was trained for combat in large, open areas, and managed to hold off the Persian army not through personal strength, but through expert military formation. Both are cited, historically, as being well-protected by their armour as well. Just something to bear in mind...
