TATOO and Piercing
« on: February 15, 2009, 01:06:07 pm »
Why do people get these, I have nothing against them. But I'd like to hear why people here get them, or want to get them. Tattoos seem a little more interesting to me because they seem to be able to mean more the the individual who gets them, more customizable, I just don't have anything that means enough to me to be on my body the rest of my life. Piercings just seem like everything has been done and it's kind of boring now. Basically though I just want to know why people chose the ones they did, or their wishlist and why they would get those.

I get the work done because I like decoration, decorum, and adornment. I have my lip pierced, in the center, for several reasons. 1) I like piercings, 2) I like symmetry, 3) I just like the look of cold, silver metal accenting my lip.

As for why, generally, for me, piercings are an aesthetic choice. I like, like I said, the look of a silver ring here or there on the face or anywhere really. I feel like for some it can enhance what is there, while for others it only detracts. Piercings don't work for everyone, but I like them well enough for myself. Unfortunately I can't get anymore because I scar up pretty badly, but I really like the one I still have in my lip.

And with tattoos, I get them because I like to decorate my body with images of devotion, faith, or interest. I don't like to just get random symbols or images on me wherever, but when I can get a tattoo that goes with who I am, doesn't stand out so much as appear as a further means of completion, then I really appreciate the art form.

For example, I have a winged cross/sword on my inner forearm. This is a part of my body I like to accentuate because it shows so often, so getting tattoos there, particularly one representing my faith, brandished like a weapon, is something that I have an interest in.

I kept alive the family tradition of sporting a popular cat tattoo when in the military. GRandfather had a Felix the Cat, because he had a bag of tricks. Me, I got a Garfield. I like lasagna. lol oh sigh.

I agree with Eve on this. There have been countless threads on tattoos, and some on piercings, and Eve and I seem to be the standard ones who post in them.

I have my lip pierced twice on one side. Why? Because when I was a Junior in high school, I wanted one, then I got another one. They were for looks, but now they're just a part of me. If I took them out, I suppose it wouldn't care, the only reason I don't is that it'd be like I was missing something, that, and it's habit to play with them.

Tattoos, I pretty much have the same opinon on as Rodney does. Only I'm more of.. getting work done on what I'm interested in. I want to remember who I was and what I was into when I'm older. I'm going to continue getting work done of what I'm interested in throughout the years so I can look back and remember the kind of person I grew up to be and the phases I went through.

i agree with eve and sayda. i have a nostril piercing, and a septum. i just like the way they look on me, and the septum seems a little different than the norm, though i know a lot of people have them. piercings are nice just for the look of them. i pretty much have the same opinion on them as eve.

tattoos are amazing for their artistic value and the way they openly display the ideas/faith/interests of the person who has them. i have 8 so far, and all of them display different aspects of my life, faith, loves, and interests. i really enjoy showing people my body art and sharing those parts of myself. i can really appreciate other peoples tattoos based on the love i have for mine. tattoos can be beautiful representations of people that they can share with the world.

most everyone says "oh, you'll regret it when you're older" about tattoos, but really, i know i won't, and most people who get them won't either. a lot of people take a long time to plan out their tattoos before they actually get them; some people take years to do it. yeah, some people who get spontaneously tattooed may regret it later, but that is a small percentage. tattoos are, like sayda said, a reminder of who you are when you get them and what you value. i know with mine i will always love the things the tattoos represent, such as my faith, the one i love and am going to spend my life with, my interests, etc. i spend enough time planning them out that i know i won't regret them. if everyone did that, then a lot less people would think tattoos are something to regret later in life. (i really am getting tired of people telling me i'll regret getting them too... seems most everyone i talk to who is older than me thinks that way >.<)

anyway, i've rambled long enough, as usual. i just love tattoos so much. if only they weren't so darned expensive, i'd probably have my sleeves by now, along with a great many more, lol

I'm sure I have some of the more random Tattoos on this forum

For example...

I get ink done to have the things I enjoy become a part of me. I currently have 10 tattoos, probably 13 by the end of the month :) Some of my work is more meanignful than others, such as my wedding ring and High School Bar code, others are just random things, like my finger mustache, but everything is special to me.

As for piecings, I have my tongue done, I hardly notice it anymore.... I've had it for 12 years now lol... made me popular when I was in high school

I love the look of some tattoos.  I especially like ones that respond to the shape of the body, as opposed to just being a random design.  Sadly, with my severe dye allergy I will likely never get a tattoo.  I've talked to a bunch of shops, but none of them know what is in their inks.  I'd hoped when I moved to Portland that I would find some shop hippy enough to use all natural stuff, but, nope.

my friend did mine and used none iron japanese ink, but that was back in Vegas, the only thing I dont like about th ink is that it fades faster over time.

I only have one tattoo on my left ankle. It's a blue wave design with two stars in the center. I guess it was kind of a spontaneous tattoo. My sister knew this guy who did tattoos and he offered to do them for us for $5 one night. My best friend and I got the same tattoo done, so it's really special to me.

I have 3 piercings in each ear. I can't remember having the first set done, and the two other sets I did on my own. I'm not sure why I did it, I think  it was just a 'hey this would be cool' thing.

I hope nobody took offense to the thread, I just really am curious as to what these things mean to people. If it's something that comes from somewhere or if it's just the vain/rebelious response.

I have 12 tats so far, shooting for more soon :) I think most of them are posted in here; I'll run down what they mean for you since you asked

1: Leo Symbol - Back of my neck - Well I'm a Triple Leo (Sun, moon, rising), so it's pretty self explanitory. Astrology has played a big part in my life, I used to make charts for my friends, and was actually a phone psychic for quite a while.

2: Winged Lion - R. Shoulder Blade - If I regretted a tattoo it's this one, I don't regret getting it, I just regret that it's on my back and I never see it :( It's a beautiful piece, so much so that the person that drew it for my got it as a tatoo as well. It goes back to the Leo thing, I just really like Lions

3: Bar Code - L. Ankle - Thi sis my class ring, under the bar code it says HVGRAD2000. I wasn't able to afford an expensive class ring like some of the people I went to high school with, so I got this instead

4: 3 of Swords - R. Shoulder - I used to read Tarot quite a bit, and this was one of my favorite cards. Depending on placement and spread it can mean anything from courage to heartbreak. It's also a tribute to three girls that I had very unsuccessful relationships with, and a little reminder to myself, to perservere.

5: Chinese Dragon - R. Chest - Some people carry a gun or a knife for protection... I have a freaking dragon that lives on my chest, it doesn't get more awesome than that. He doesn't have any deeper philosophical meaning - I just also like dragons

6: Wedding Ring - L. Ring Finger - I can't wear jewerly at work, so instead of getting a wedding ring, I got a tatoo of a wedding ring. It's a mix of the infinity symbol and the libra symbol

7: Deadpool - L. Shoulder - Deadpool is my favorite comic book character of all time, as such he deserves a spot on my arm

8: Rorshach with Text "Qui Vigila als Vigilants?" - R. Inside Forearm - The Watchmen is a powerful, powerful book, it speaks volumes on World Relations and Division of Power. Rorschach, to me, is the idea of absolutism, that all of us have inside, that needs to be both nutured and imprisoned.

9: Mustache - R. Index Finger - Sometimes it's important to have an escape route. This is mine - mustache man is my disguise should I ever need it.

10: Teardrop - L. Index Finger - Well after I spent ten years in prison for killing a man.... err I mean, how else will you guys no when I'm sad?

11: Heroes Symbol - R. Chest - I like the show Heroes... and it's a cool little symbol, fits in nicely with my dragon. I like the idea, as being marked for having superpowers

12: Trigrams for Fire and Water - R. Outside Forearm - Triple Meaning on this one - 1st it's StormShadow's ninja clan tatoo... and well I'm a ninja. 2nd it's symbols from the S. Korean flag, and TaeKwonDo and martial arts are a huge part of my life. 3rd - together these two symbols symbolize balance - which is the single most important aspect of martial arts - and life.

Hope that helps :)
