Official Wig Help Thread
« on: March 26, 2009, 06:38:40 pm »
Everyone that has wig questions or concerns come here! It'd be nice if we could keep all of our lovely wig discussing in one wig-licious place!

So I just finished straightening a ridiclously curly wig... with a straightener. And it worked fabulously! Most people say that hair straighteners are the death of wigs but that's only true if common sense is disregarded. As long as the straightener is on a low heat and it's not left over the wig fibers for too long it should be fine. Mine was on a heat of 2/30 if that's any help :D

I'll post some pics soon, once I get them uploaded. I'm planning on using it for a Nami (One Piece) cosplay.

Feel free to share any and all wig-isodes and wig-scapades!

I have a tragic story of the wig from my first con but we won't go there because it's epically tragic. T_T;;

Another method for straightening wigs is to run hot water over them. What I do is pin the wig to the wig head, boil some water for about two to three minutes on high. Then I put the wig head on the plunger and put the plunger in the shower, or bathtub, then pour the hot water over it. Afterwards you leave it as it is and let it dry on its own and voila!

@Tofu, if you don't want to go buy a razor, I would suggest sectioning off parts of the wig, then taking a smaller section of the bigger sections and cutting them diagonally or straight up into the wig hair for a thinned out look rather then straight across.

@ tofu, It'd be a lot easier to help if you posted pics of the characters and maybe even your base wig. Hm... Attack it with scissors? :D

Okay... here it is, my wig that's gone from zero to hero! <3

Ewww! Say it ain't so! As you can see this is a curly, tangled up beast. Surely it's impossible to straighten...!

Ha ha, I don't have a wig head yet so Buddha's gonna have to do.

Before straightening my wig with my hair straightener I attempt to brush out some of the curls to make the job easier. Seen above, my weapon of choice.

Progress shot! Part of the straightened wig is isolated in a ponytail to the side while the rest is everywhere. Buddha wasn't working so I tried thumbtacking my wig to my Haruhi plushie... It was a bit difficult.

And so I straightened on for at least an hour! It's a bit tedious but a lot more involving and less of a hassle than the hot water method so it was good times.

The finished product?

Ta-da! Now I just need to style it and I'll have me a Nami wig! Yes I'm a bit tired in my pics but it's the fatigue of satisfaction. Straightening wigs takes a while but it gives you such an accomplished feeling.

Excuse me on the pic-heaviness! Hooray for my straightened wig <3

I have some questions...

1) How do I get a wig to stay on easily? (I've heard of those odd wig pins, but...)

2) Does anyone know any good wig sites with great quality and good prices?

1) All I use is a wig cap and my wigs stay on great. Most of mine are shorter though, for long wigs you should probably pin them to your wig cap.

2) cosworx.com and amphigory.com are both well-trusted excellent sites with a variety of wigs to choose from. What I love about them is their great customer service. Also, you can try ebay for wigs but that's at your own risk. cosplaywig on ebay have some good wigs but sometimes they can fool you with colors. I ordered what I thought would be a nice, dark brown wig and it was way lighter than expected.

Oh! And cosplay.com has a marketplace where users sell wigs and cosplay. Also use this at your own risk but I got my Kallen wig from the marketplace and I love it to death <3

I've gotten two wigs at stores.ebay.com/professionalonly, and they're really good. ^^

Amphigory and Cosworx are great, too, from what I hear.

@ tori - There's usually two little clip things on either side of the wig, I just bring those to the back of my head and attach them, it makes the wig a lot tighter.

@ olsa - I got mine at Value Village for cheap, also Sally's has them for about three dollars.

Yeah if anyone has any questions on styling I can help out a little. Some wigs can be straightened with a flat iron. I do a little test on a small unnoticeable piece if they can be.

Also i get all my wigs from Professional Only on Ebay. They are great quality and they are cheap. http://stores.ebay.com/Professional-Only

it was actually a black wig, and I added extensions to the base of the wig with glue. I got the extensions at sally's and the wig is http://cgi.ebay.com/PW109-Super-Black-Blood-Of-Demons-Cosplay-Wig-Free-SHIP_W0QQitemZ400039229568QQihZ027QQcategoryZ73575QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1742.m153.l1262?_trksid=p1742.m153.l1262

I styled it a little more so now it looks more like Albel's hair....and less like....well normal hair. Well actually....the wig looks a lot more like the picture now.

You can glue them in. when you put extensions in your own hair they have a special type of glue for it.

XDDDDD A hot glue gun. I just glued it to the wig cap that the hair is attached to. It doesn't stretch anymore but that is ok, it makes it fit better :P

As far as I know, Michael's doesn't have wig heads. I had gone to Sally's a whole bunch of times before, but I couldn't find the wig heads. xD They were on the bottom shelf, where I NEVER look. So, I guess my point is to look at your feet once in a while.

Question: Do you think that the wig here > http://amphigory.com/wigs_winged_flip.html would work for my Seras cosplay?
Seras's hair looks like this:

(It tends to look different from other angles - longer, flippier)
If so, can you give me some styling tips?

I think it would work well but I think the flip is a bit too much on the wig. You can easily fix that with just brushing it out....the wig may even come perfectly.

Using Got2b styling gel on that wig would get you the spikes you want.

Oh I used a spray bottle and soaked the ink in the bottle then sprayed the wig.
it wasn't working to i just took the ink directly to the wig with the alcohol still on it. The color came out okay but it was uneven and unconsistant.

If you still need to fix it you could just use a sharpie straight on. It's tome consuming but it makes the color very rich.
