ok, does it bother you when people call you hun?
It really ticks me off for some reason, I don't know why, just needed your opinion.

It's funny, because to me, even when they say it because they care, I still want to smack them. I think it's because I used to talk to this guy over IMVU and he always called me hun. I'm pretty sure he was a freaking child molester too.
I think it's demeaning, and insulting.
(plus, I had a bad experience with someone who called me hun)

What if someone prefaces it with "Attila the..."

:-D

I think it can be like "buddy" for men. Much depends on the tone and the immediate situation.
From one man to another who is generally a stranger, "Hey, buddy could you hold this for a second.." can be appropriate to maintaining minimum politeness and an impersonal situation ('look, this is just two seconds, it's not like I really need to get to know you...')

But 'buddy' can also be used to express discontent, again mostly by tone and body language in the situation. In that case it can function like 'Hey, buster...' which simply cannot be used to express a positive bond.

'Hon,' and 'honey' may also have regional variances; I've heard it's used in the Southeast for pleasant and polite situations, so if the speaker grew up there or spent a lot of time there, then he or she may just be trying to be NICE.

Quote from: Kallika

This sentiment is exactly what has made it so arbitrarily dangerous for man to compliment a woman at work. The man can't tell which camp he's in. Two men can say the exact same phrase, but if she finds one guy repulsive (and he doesn't know it - she wouldn't tell him that in advance, right?) then that guy gets a call from HR for harassment. Even though he said the same thing Mister Bishounen said.

Hrm. . Sometimes, if I don't really like the person/they don't like me, or if there's a debate going on, it sounds very condescending.

Some people can pull it off, though.

Yeah, like the entirety of the pet-name spectrum pisses me off...
then again I've never had a boyfriend, so I've never had anyone but my girl/guy friends calling me by pet names.
Maybe if it was someone who I really liked I wouldn't mind it so much.

I hate it when they're younger than me, or I am trying to tell them how to do something.

It's a term of endearment for a child or loved one, but it's derogatory otherwise. I do put up with it from waitresses though.

I only call people I know who's a few to several years younger than me 'hun' and only if they are girls. But that's only when they are going through a rough patch or need help.

There are only certain people who can get away with calling me it, otherwise it's awkward or makes me rather peeved. I think those people are Panda, big sis, my mom, and maybe my friend Misti... but even she pushes it sometimes lol.

I used to hate it cause a girl I went to high school with would call me hun and she was always really condescending about, but I have since been working with a woman who grew up in the south and so uses alot of those cutesy terms for people. I have spent so much time with her that I have found myself unwittingly calling people hun or sug.... sorta freaks me out.

There is a lady I work with who call me "hun" but I think she is from the south and calls everyone that. It does not bother me one bit cause we are friends. But if I called her "hun" I think I would sound a bit creepy as I dont normaly talk like that. It just depends on who says it and what your connection is to them.

I guess.
My friend and I were having a fight and one of her lines was:
"life isn't fair hun, get over yourself"
I hated it, and now I hate the term hun even more than I did.

I do guess though that if that's just the way they talk than it's totally ok, as long as it's what they say to everyone.

one time my friends 6 year old daughter called me sweetie

That's so cute!

I like to call my friends things like 'hun' and 'girly' and 'sweetie' but that's mainly because of my group of friends, I'm like the 'broken family' magnet. All of my friends come from incomplete or horribly hard to deal with families, and I think they find it comforting when I call them that (the guys usually get 'bud' except for the gay one because he's 'babe') because I'm a constant in their life and I treat them like a mother would.

I'm the mother hen type, like a momma cat. I have all my little kittens around me, and I lavish love and attention on them and take care of them all the time. Is that in my best interest? No, but I know they need me to be there...

And because of that fact, I find myself coming up with "cutesy" nicknames for people. Like, I've wanted to call Dana Dana-kins before because she's so cute and adorable. (I didn't, but the thought was there... XD)

I don't say it to offend anyone, or say it condescendingly, it's just a thing that's slipped into my vocabulary like pronouncing breakfast 'breffix.' Sometimes I just can't help it, I'm in the mindset of a mom. *shrug*
This is my life. These are my choices.

Eh, I'm used to it. I mean, that's how my mom usually talks to everybody and I heard it a lot in Kentucky from the people in the neighborhood...o.o;

Now I don't use it. But I do tend to call people that I've started talking to "Dear". I don't know why. It just happens? It's usually when I'm telling them not to worry about something when they think they've made me mad or something xD. But I do have a habit of calling people Dear. o.o; Mainly because if I said "Hun" with my slight accent it would sound kind of sarcastic while other little names sound more nice. Like a compliment. lol. Oh my, I've ranted again.

I suppose I hate the tone of a word more than the actual word. For example, the word sweetheart can be either nice or demeaning, all depending on the person's tone of voice... and if they're a creeper. :D

I seriously HATE when people call me Kate!!! I prefer people to just call me Kaitlyn, and if their gonna give me a nickname I really just hope it's not Katie, I REALLY hate being called that for some reason. Kiddo is the worst though.... I'm 19 years old and it just rubs me the wrong way when guys who are like 3 years younger than me call me "kiddo" because I look kinda young for my age.

Again though it's more the tone of a word than the word itself that bugs me... I've had guy friends call me sweetie, babe, or hun and it was perfectly fine. On the flipside if some doucher guy is being super condescending and keeps calling me "babe"  then I'm really gonna get irritated.
